Ballerina (Karina Sarkissova) sacked for posing nude

Getting fired for posing nude in Europe? That’s like being arested for smoking weed in California. It just doesn’t add up.

The UK Telegraph reports that a ballerina has been sacked by the Vienna State opera after she posed nude despite being warned not to do it again.

The management of the prestigious institutions says solo dancer Karina Sarkissova was axed Aug. 23 after a series of provocative photos of her appeared in the September issue of the
Austrian men’s fashion and lifestyle magazine “Wiener.”

A statement on Friday said she had already been reprimanded in May for nude shots that were taken in the opera house without permission and published in the June edition of “Penthouse.”

“She was fired on August 23 after this new publication,” Dominique Meyer, the opera’s director, said

“The ballet corps has been shocked by these new images which appeared in the sex section,” he added.

“On the cover of the magazine, you could read 'The ballerina nude, the ballet as we love it,’” he said.

Sarkissova is Austrian dancer of Russian origin. Born in 1983, she was trained at Russia’s famous Bolshoi Ballet and joined the Vienna Opera ballet in 2000.

UPDATE: 'Nude' ballerina back on stage

THE Vienna State Opera's ballet company has rehired a ballerina fired for posing in the nude for a men's magazine after being warned not to.

Solo dancer Karina Sarkissova was sacked by the renowned institution on Aug 23 after a series of provocative shots appeared in the September issue of an Austrian men's magazine.

She had already been admonished in May for nude photos taken in the opera house without permission and published in the June edition of Penthouse. A statement on Thursday said Sarkissova will be allowed back on stage after she apologised on Wednesday.

Sarkissova said in comments released by the opera house that she didn't mean to cause any harm. -- AP
